GODLY SORROW WORKETH

REPENTANCE (II COR. 7:10)

 

INTRO:

1. Repentance has been called the hardest command to obey.

2. Baptism presents NO difficulty for the one who has genuinely repented.

3. The Bible places GREAT emphasis upon repentance; Acts 17:30; Lk. 13:3.

 

BODY:

I. "GODLY SORROW WORKETH REPENTANCE."

    1. There is a certain kind of sorrow involved in repentance---"godly sorrow."

        a. Not sorrow because one has been hurt.

        b. But sorrow because God has been hurt.

    2. It is sorrow that recognizes sin to be not only a violation of God's law, but also His

            love.

II. HOW REPENTANCE AFFECTS MAN.

    1. Repentance affects the intellect, the ability to reason.

    2. Before a sinner can repent he must reflect upon his actions.

    3. Not only must there be a consciousness of sin but a conviction of sin.

        a. Simon Acts 8:22-24.

        b. Must realize EVERY sin is against God.

        c. Must want to be right with God.

    4. Repentance affects the will-power; the ability to do or act.

    5. Repentance affects the emotion, the ability to love and hate.

    6. While a person can be sorry for his sins and not repent, he can not repent without

            being sorry for his sins.

 

CONCLUSION:

    Let us be sure we understand what it means to repent.
