THE OVERCOMING OF SIN

Intro:

    1. A wonderful blessing of the Christian life is forgiveness of sin

Acts 22:16.

    2. This does not mean our problem with sin is over l Jn. 1:8, 10.

    3. From this study we will be concerned with how sin develops,

and how to overcome the Same.

Body:

I. THE FIRST STAGE IS TEMPTATION.

    1. Temptation includes two things; Desire (lust) and

        enticement Jas. 1:14.

    2. This forms a simple equation: Temptation = Desire +

Opportunity. Therefore, second stage is sin itself and death

        if un-repentant Jas. 1:15.

    3. The final equation: Desire + Opportunity + No

         Forgiveness = Death.

II. HOW TO OVERCOME SIN.

    1. Change our desires Gal. 5:24.

    2. Word of God instrumental Ps. 119:11; Mt. 4:3-10.

    3. The more we study God’s word, the less likely we will

         have the desire to sin.

    4. Limit our opportunities.

    5. Avoid those with evil behavior and encourage us to sin

        Ps. 101:6-7; I Cor. 15:33.

III. EXERCISE SELF CONTROL.

    1. Temptation becomes sin when we yield to action in

        fulfilling our sinful desire.

    2. Self control is one aspect of the fruit of the Spirit

        Gal. 5:22-23.

    3. We are not alone as we try to do God’s will Phil. 2:12-13.

CONCLUSION:

We can use God’s grace to overcome sin in our lives!
